AEW executives are discussing plans to potentially consolidate two of the company’s mid-card championships, according to a new report. Fightful Select reveals that the organization has been exploring the possibility of unifying the AEW Continental Championship with the AEW International Championship in the coming months.
The report indicates that multiple creative pitches have circulated internally for a title unification match that would feature two of wrestling’s most celebrated performers. According to Fightful, the proposed scenario would involve Kenny Omega first capturing the International Championship from current titleholder Konosuke Takeshita before facing Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada in a championship unification bout.
This potential matchup carries significant historical weight as Omega and Okada previously delivered a legendary series of matches in New Japan Pro Wrestling that many critics consider among the greatest in modern wrestling history. Their last singles encounter occurred in 2018, when Omega defeated Okada in a two-out-of-three falls match that extended beyond 60 minutes.
The path toward this potential championship consolidation begins at AEW Revolution later this month, where Omega challenges Takeshita for the International Championship. The Japanese star has held the title since October 2023 after defeating Will Ospreay at AEW WrestleDream.
Meanwhile, Okada has maintained possession of the Continental Championship since dethroning Eddie Kingston in March 2024, approaching the one-year mark of his reign. Kingston made history as the inaugural Continental Champion by winning a tournament established specifically for the title in late 2023.
The International Championship itself has undergone changes since its introduction, initially debuting in 2022 as the All-Atlantic Championship before being renamed to its current designation in March 2023.
Fightful’s report did not specify a timeline for the potential unification, noting only that discussions have been ongoing for several months, suggesting the company continues evaluating the championship structure within its expanding roster.
