AEW Vacates Title Due to Injury of Current Champion

An interim ROH Women’s Television Champion will be crowned at this Friday’s SuperCard of Honor event. The decision comes as a direct result of an injury to the reigning champion, Red Velvet, who is unable to compete.

AEW and ROH President Tony Khan confirmed the news during a media call on July 8, revealing the injury will prevent Velvet from defending her championship. This development has also caused a delay in the planned ROH Women’s Pure Championship tournament.

“With the injury to Red Velvet, it’s something that I think she’s going to be able to work through, but she’s not going to be able to defend, due to injury, the women’s TV championship at Supercard of Honor. I will address that situation with an interim TV title. Because Red Velvet will not be able to compete, I will be having an ROH Women’s TV Title Interim Champion crowned at SuperCard of Honor.”

Khan elaborated on the ripple effect of the situation, noting the overlap in talent between the two championship pictures.

“That situation caused some delays in getting the Pure Title tournament started because, frankly, it’s a lot of the same people fighting for the interim TV champion position, who would also be in line for the Pure tournament. I think Red Velvet will be back in a matter of weeks, maybe a few months, tops.”

The injury brings a halt to a dominant reign for Red Velvet, who has held the title for nearly a full year. She captured the championship from Billie Starkz at Death Before Dishonor on July 26, 2024, and has successfully defended it seven times. Her most recent match was a victory over Kira on June 20 during the Fantasticamania tour in Arena Mexico.

With an interim champion set to be determined on July 11 in Texas, the stage is now set for an eventual title unification match upon Red Velvet’s return to action.
