While CM Punk has recently maintained that a key to his successful marriage with AJ Lee is to avoid working together, his wife has now offered a different perspective. During a recent appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Lee suggested she is open to a future collaboration, a notable shift from the narrative Punk has presented.
After joking that not working together is what has kept them happily married for 12 years, Lee left the door open for a potential project down the line.
“Oh my gosh, I think the key to being married for 12 years is that we don’t work together. [Laughs] But yeah, it’d be really cool. ‘Never say never’ is what I say to all the things when people ask me where I’m going to work. But yeah, he’s a really good writer and a really good artist — acting and wrestling,” Lee stated.
Her comments stand in direct contrast to Punk’s very recent and firm public position. In interviews conducted between July 17 and July 21, Punk doubled down on the couple’s agreement to keep their professional lives separate, a decision they made after their on-screen storyline in 2012-2013.
“There are really two things me and my wife don’t do together. One is to work out and the other is to work together. It’s really the perfect relationship,” Punk said.
In a more detailed statement, Punk explained that any collaboration would have to be a “perfect fit” and not forced, emphasizing that he and Lee thrive by pursuing their own projects. Since her retirement from wrestling in 2015 due to neck and back issues, Lee has focused on writing and producing.
While there are no confirmed projects for the couple, and Punk has been adamant about their professional separation, Lee’s remarks have newly fueled fan hopes. Her “never say never” attitude introduces a new dynamic to the long-running question of whether the popular duo will ever share the screen again.
