Alberto Del Rio WWE Return Remains Highly Unlikely

WWE inherited Alberto Del Rio's contract after acquiring AAA, but internal debate and his controversial past have stalled any potential return to the company's programming.

Alberto Del Rio WWE Return Remains Highly Unlikely

After WWE acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in April 2025, the company gained control of former World Champion Alberto Del Rio’s contract. Still, his future remains uncertain. He hasn’t appeared on crossover shows like Worlds Collide or TripleMania, leaving his role in WWE unclear.

Del Rio’s last match came on September 26 at an AAA affiliate event, where he teamed with Mr. Iguana for a tag team win. While absent from WWE programming, his name continues to resonate in Mexico. Fans have been chanting “Alberto!” at recent AAA shows, showing he still draws support locally.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, his status has sparked debate inside WWE. Some officials see him as a proven star whose popularity in Mexico could help fuel the company’s global push. Others remain cautious, pointing to his history of legal problems and controversies during his previous WWE run. The situation is even more complicated by the fact that AAA wrote him out in a “Loser Leaves Town” match just before WWE’s takeover.

For now, WWE is taking a wait-and-see approach. Del Rio is under contract through AAA, but no creative plans are in place. One of the most recognizable names from the acquisition is effectively sidelined.

Meanwhile, fans are making their voices heard. A petition on Change.org calling for Del Rio’s WWE return has gathered more than 500 verified signatures, as reported by Ringside News. Supporters describe him as a “pillar and representative of Mexican wrestling” whose talent could inject new energy into the product.

That push from fans clashes with WWE’s stance just two years ago. In 2023, a senior executive was blunt: there was “no f–king chance” Del Rio would ever come back, insisting his return had “never been any real consideration” since he left in 2016.

At the time of WWE’s purchase, Del Rio held the AAA Mega Championship, which he later lost to El Hijo del Vikingo. His 2025 has also included a six-month suspension from Tijuana events after a March altercation. While reports indicate his AAA run is over, Del Rio hasn’t closed the door on wrestling entirely. He’s currently working on a reality TV project in Mexico.
