CM Punk has opened up about the true motivation behind his long-standing desire to headline WrestleMania, revealing a practical reason rather than a matter of prestige. The veteran performer finally achieves this career milestone this weekend at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas.
During his appearance on The Masked Man Show with hosts David Shoemaker and Kazeem Famuyide, CM Punk explained that financial considerations drove his main event aspirations.
The reason why I was so obsessed with the main event of WrestleMania is pay scale. There isn’t a single person that can criticize me that can explain professional wrestling pay scale. If I’m in the main event, I get paid more money.
CM Punk noted that the compensation structure in WWE has evolved since his earlier run with the company.
That does not exist anymore. Everybody is on flat salary, and we get paid stupid money for what we do.
Despite this change, he expressed his thoughts on wrestler compensation:
Yes, I do think we should all get paid more based on things I see the company doing and shouting from the rooftops of how much money TKO is making.
At this stage of his career, CM Punk indicated that financial gain no longer drives his decisions.
I’m 46, I don’t need money at this point in my life. Biggie was right; more money, more problems. I hate it, so much.
CM Punk will square off against Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns in the Night One main event of WrestleMania 41 on Saturday, completing a career goal that had previously eluded him.
