CM Punk directly addressed retirement speculation ahead of his participation in tonight’s Men’s Elimination Chamber Match. The former AEW World Champion responded to Jeff Hardy’s recent comments about wanting to retire him in WWE.
In his conversation with Daily Mail Sport, Punk made it clear he has no immediate plans to end his wrestling career, despite Hardy’s expressed desire to be his final opponent. The Second City Saint also alluded to previous complications in their professional relationship.
He says he wants to retire me? I’d like to be able to fly but I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. I think there’s got to be a lot of bridges to be crossed. I don’t know how many years I have left. I’m all for giving people second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth chances. There’s a lot of experiences I didn’t enjoy so much, we don’t gotta get into it, I root for people to be free of whatever demons possess them so if he’s coming back here, great we’ll see what happens.
The context for these comments stems from Hardy’s interview several months ago where he outlined his ideal WWE return scenario. During that conversation, The Charismatic Enigma specifically mentioned wanting to retire Punk before eventually receiving a WWE Hall of Fame induction.
The timing of Punk’s response comes as he prepares to compete against five other competitors in tonight’s Elimination Chamber Match. The winner will challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.
This potential rivalry carries significant history, as Punk and Hardy previously engaged in a memorable feud in 2009. Their renewed connection now happens against the backdrop of The Hardy Boys’ recent return to WWE through the company’s talent-sharing agreement with TNA.
While Punk expressed skepticism about Hardy’s retirement match proposal, he left the door open for future collaboration if circumstances align properly. His focus currently remains on tonight’s premium live event and the potential WrestleMania opportunity it presents.
