Everything You Need To Know About A Potential Alberto Del Rio WWE Return

Rumors of an Alberto Del Rio return to WWE continue to circulate, fueled by a complex mix of backstage reports, public endorsements from wrestling legends, and the star’s own complicated history with the company. While a contingent of influential figures is reportedly pushing for his comeback, WWE’s official stance remains firm, creating a picture filled with conflicting information.

The strongest case for a return comes from within the WWE locker room itself. A recent report from Lucha Libre Online’s Hugo Savinovich claims that top stars, including Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, and The Undertaker, are advocating for Del Rio to be given another chance. This sentiment was seemingly echoed publicly by Rey Mysterio at AAA’s Triplemania XXXIII in August, where he responded to fan chants for Del Rio by saying, “I’ll bring him, wait on me.”

Support also extends to respected veterans. Jim Ross has called Del Rio a “very good talent,” while Teddy Long suggested a slow and deliberate build could make a return impactful. There have even been rumored creative discussions for a comeback, including a controversial concept for a pro-American heel character with the catchphrase, “Make WWE Great Again.”

Despite this apparent internal and external support, WWE has officially and consistently maintained that it has no interest in bringing Del Rio back. In July 2025, company sources insisted his status “has not changed” and bluntly refuted claims he had been approached for the Royal Rumble. A senior official stated, “If we wanted Alberto at all… he’d be here.”

The company’s actions following TKO’s acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in April 2025 support this position. WWE inherited Del Rio’s existing AAA contract but did not offer him a new one. Instead, they took deliberate steps to conclude the relationship, booking him to lose the AAA Mega Championship before writing him off television in a “loser leaves AAA” match that ended his contractual run on July 25.

Del Rio’s past remains the most significant hurdle. His first WWE tenure ended in a 2014 firing for “unprofessional conduct” after he slapped an employee over an alleged racist remark. His second run concluded in 2016 following a Wellness Policy violation and creative dissatisfaction.

His time away from the company has been marked by further controversy, most notably a 2020 arrest that led to indictments for aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. While those charges were ultimately dismissed, the situation, combined with more recent physical altercations—including one on a live Mexican talk show in May 2025—reinforces the corporate hesitation to bring him back into the fold.
