WWE star Finn Balor has expressed his desire to face Hiroshi Tanahashi one last time before the NJPW President retires from in-ring competition. In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Balor spoke about revisiting their history, which began nearly two decades ago. Tanahashi’s final match is scheduled for Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4, 2026, as he transitions fully to his executive role.
Balor, who competed in NJPW as Prince Devitt, reflected on his formative years as a Young Lion and the respect he holds for the eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Their last encounter took place during the New Japan Cup in March 2014, shortly before Balor signed with WWE.
“When I was a Young Lion, he sat across from me the first time I got on the New Japan bus. I was so nervous, I thought it was a dream that my favorite wrestler would be my teammate,” Balor said. “I want to fight him one more time before he retires.”
Although he hopes for the match, Balor admitted it is unlikely he will be Tanahashi’s final opponent. A major obstacle is NJPW’s ongoing partnership with AEW, highlighted by the annual Forbidden Door event, which makes a WWE appearance improbable.
“That would be great (being Hiroshi Tanahashi’s final opponent), but I’m not that lucky,” Balor stated.
Balor also took the opportunity to thank Tanahashi for his career and his role in supporting international talent within NJPW.
“But I want to take this opportunity to say a few words to Tanahashi. He’s had an incredible career. Thank you for being so kind to New Japan’s foreign wrestlers. (Takashi) Iizuka, (Jushin Thunder) Liger, (Yuji) Nagata, everyone was so kind,” he continued. “With the support of my family-like teammates, I was able to quickly adapt to the rigors of the ring. It’s scary to live in a faraway country where you don’t even speak the language, but New Japan welcomed me so warmly. I’m forever grateful.”
