Former WWE star JTG believes the company’s tag team division under Triple H requires more attention, specifically in the development of compelling, character-driven teams. The member of the popular Cryme Tyme tag team noted that while the division receives more television time than in his era, it has yet to produce teams reaching the popularity levels of legendary duos like Doom or The Usos.
Speaking on UnSKripted, JTG elaborated on his view of the current landscape.
“I think the tag team division is getting a lot more play than when me and Shad were there. As far as character-wise, I think they got some cool tag teams in there. I think they could do some more with some more character tag teams, that’s not too over the top. For example, I am digging, I was digging the Viking Tag team (The war Raiders). I like the tag team but I just couldn’t grasp the gimmick with them.”
JTG’s call for a stronger focus on character work comes as recent booking for tag teams and factions has seen mixed execution. The main event of the September 1st episode of Raw, for instance, featured Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed securing a significant win, a move seen as a necessary step to build their credibility.
However, other tag team segments have drawn criticism. A match on the same show between the Kabuki Warriors and members of The Judgment Day was noted for sloppy moments, with reports indicating Kairi Sane seemed “off” during the contest.
The scrutiny extends to the company’s most prominent faction-based storyline involving The Bloodline. One recent critique suggested that a segment where Jimmy Uso slapped Gunther inadvertently weakened the booking of his brother, Jey Uso, prompting calls for a re-evaluation of their feud’s direction.
Meanwhile, a compelling segment between CM Punk and Becky Lynch has fueled widespread interpretation that a storyline is developing for AJ Lee to return, potentially forming another high-profile team.
