International Star Captures Major NJPW Title Amid WWE Interest Rumors

Jeff Cobb added new gold to his collection at NJPW Sakura Genesis on April 5, securing the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship alongside Callum Newman. The pair defeated Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi in a match lasting just under 11 minutes to claim the prestigious tag titles.

This championship victory comes amid swirling reports about WWE’s interest in Cobb. Fightful initially reported on March 13 that WWE had targeted the international star, with a source claiming Cobb had appeared on the company’s internal talent list, though this remained unconfirmed. Dave Meltzer later added that contract discussions had taken place between Cobb and WWE, but no finalized agreement was reported.

Speculation about Cobb’s potential NJPW departure intensified following his elimination in the New Japan Cup quarterfinals. Despite previously expressing his intention to remain with the Japanese promotion, his tournament loss fueled rumors of an imminent exit from the company.

The new championship reign marks Cobb’s third run with the IWGP tag titles, following two brief stints as champion in 2022. His current title victory suggests that, at least for the immediate future, Cobb will continue performing for NJPW as part of the United Empire faction rather than jumping to WWE.
