The Rock wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel and align with him on the road to WrestleMania 41, according to a new report. This alternative scenario would have significantly changed the direction of WWE’s current storyline.
In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that The Rock initially pitched for Rhodes to turn heel and form an alliance with him ahead of WrestleMania 41.
According to the report, Rhodes rejected this idea, which led to plans shifting to John Cena, who was reportedly The Rock’s second choice for the heel turn.
The report states that sources within WWE believe a Cody Rhodes heel turn could have negatively impacted the company’s current momentum. The feeling internally is that the present WWE audience belongs to Rhodes.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful corroborated this information earlier today, adding further credibility to the report.
At WWE Elimination Chamber last weekend, Rhodes declined The Rock’s champion offer, which subsequently led to John Cena turning heel and aligning with The Final Boss as they head toward WrestleMania.
