Major Name Debunks Report About John Cena Heel Turn Plans

A report regarding the timing of John Cena’s recent heel turn has been contradicted by someone with inside knowledge of WWE’s creative process.

Cena will challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41. Their rivalry began when Cena turned heel and aligned with The Rock at Elimination Chamber.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE initially planned for Cena to turn heel at WrestleMania 41 instead of Elimination Chamber. Dave Meltzer reported that the decision to move the heel turn forward was made on the day of Elimination Chamber.

The report implied Cena was originally set to defeat Rhodes for the championship, with the character shift occurring at the conclusion of their match.

Brian Gewirtz, former WWE writer and The Rock’s business partner, has disputed this information. Gewirtz quote-tweeted a post about Meltzer’s report, stating simply: “0 for 2.”

Cena’s WrestleMania match against Rhodes represents his opportunity to win a record-setting 17th World Championship.
