Maxwell Jacob Friedman has issued a public clarification regarding his recent critical comments about wrestling podcasters, stating they were not directed at WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray. MJF explained his remarks were aimed at individuals he described as “talentless losers” who never succeeded in wrestling but attack companies like AEW and WWE for profit.
The clarification was necessary after many fans interpreted MJF’s initial remarks as a direct response to Bully Ray’s recent critique of AEW.
Just a day prior, Bully Ray had publicly described AEW as a “lost” product on social media. While acknowledging the company’s talent, he stated it was “owned and operated by a fan with lots of money,” referring to Tony Khan, whom he called a “good guy” but “not a booker.” Ray also claimed that the wrestlers in AEW are aware of this dynamic.
In what was widely seen as a rebuttal, MJF dismissed such criticism by comparing it to unsuccessful athletes critiquing their sports, specifically naming former NBA player Anthony Bennett and MLB player John Gochnaur as examples whose opinions would not be taken seriously.
In his follow-up statement, MJF drew a clear line regarding who he was targeting.
“This wasn’t about @bullyray5150,” MJF stated. “This was a blanket statement I made in regard to talentless losers who never made it in my sport that attack both AEW, WWE, etc. companies/wrestlers in ways that aren’t constructive in the slightest to make money off of hardworking talented athletes.”
His original post used the sports analogy to make its point directly to the audience.
“Imagine if Anthony Bennett did a podcast criticizing the NBA and its players. Imagine if John Gochnaur did a podcast criticizing the MLB and its players. Would you take their opinions into account? Wrestling fans. I urge you, I know it’s hard for ya. stop being dumb. Thx.”
