Multi-Time WWE Champion Expected to Return from Injury Soon

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is expected at the WWE Performance Center this week to complete the final stages of his injury rehabilitation, according to a PWInsider Elite report from October 1. This marks a significant step toward his in-ring return after an extended absence.

Mysterio was sidelined by a groin tear that forced him out of a scheduled match at WrestleMania 41 against El Grande Americano. His spot in the high-profile match was ultimately filled by Rey Fenix. During his time off, Mysterio also underwent a separate surgery to repair a busted eardrum, addressing another lingering issue.

The recovery has taken longer than originally anticipated, as Mysterio had previously stated he was targeting a return by August. The groin injury itself was reportedly complicated by a long history of knee issues, including previous ACL and meniscus tears that have plagued the legendary luchador throughout his career.

Upon his return, it appears WWE has significant plans for him that extend beyond its own programming. A report from WrestleVotes Radio in September indicated that Mysterio is slated to become the face of the company’s growing partnership with Lucha Libre AAA once he is cleared.

Internal discussions have reportedly considered a second co-branded WWE and AAA event before the end of the year, with Survivor Series weekend in San Diego being a potential target. This has fueled speculation that a major angle could see Rey challenge his son, Dominik Mysterio, for the AAA Mega Championship in a city that has officially honored him with a “Rey Mysterio Day.” The father-son rivalry remains a key unresolved storyline, and Rey recently made his intentions clear regarding his son’s heel persona.

“He’s the Scarface of wrestling right now. He’s on cloud nine right now. Let him ride it, let him ride it. I’ll eventually knock him back on his a–.”
