Rey Mysterio Provides Update On Injury Recovery

Rey Mysterio is on the road to recovery and has set a target for his return to the ring. During a recent guest appearance on the LA PLATICA podcast, the veteran luchador provided an update on his status after undergoing surgery.

“Good. Pretty good,” Mysterio said about his recovery. “I started my PT. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”

The primary injury, a torn groin, occurred on the Friday Night SmackDown just before WrestleMania 41. Mysterio detailed the simple, unexpected moment the injury happened during the six-man tag team match.

“The guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me. He bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him and when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a (rip noise). Like, that’s it? I tore my groin like that? And yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sht,”* he explained.

In late April, Mysterio confirmed he had surgery at the Andrew’s Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama, to repair the torn abductor muscle. The combination of procedures addresses both the groin and a busted eardrum he also sustained.

The timing of the injury forced Mysterio to be pulled from his scheduled singles match against El Grande Americano on night two of WrestleMania 41. Rey Fenix was brought in as his replacement for the bout. The August return timeline was also recently echoed by wrestling veteran Konnan on his “Keepin’ It 100” podcast.
