A late change has impacted the WrestleMania 41 card as Rey Mysterio will not compete at the showcase event taking place today. The veteran made the announcement during the Countdown to WrestleMania pre-show broadcast on WWE’s YouTube channel.
The decision stems from medical staff not clearing Mysterio for in-ring action following his injury on SmackDown. “At the moment, I don’t have authorization to wrestle,” Mysterio explained during the live broadcast. WWE had continued promoting the bout despite his recent injury.
Despite this setback, the match will proceed with a replacement luchador stepping in. “There is a substitute. That substitute is Rey Fenix!” Mysterio revealed. This development follows backstage discussions where both Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix were considered potential stand-ins for the injured star.
The bout against El Grande Americano carries significant cultural importance as it’s being positioned as a defense of lucha libre tradition. For Rey Fenix, this represents his first opportunity to square off at WrestleMania, wrestling’s biggest stage. The match remains on today’s card from Las Vegas, maintaining the planned lucha libre representation at the premium live event.
