Sting has recently opened up about his retirement match, calling the experience a “dream” that went exactly as he had envisioned. In an interview on August 30, he revealed that having his sons involved was the most meaningful part of the night, stating it was “probably the highlight of 40 years for me.”
That moment saw his sons, Garrett and Steven Borden, participate directly in his final bout by appearing as “Wolfpac” and “Surfer” versions of their father. They hit the ring to deliver Stinger Splashes to The Young Bucks, who were Sting’s opponents alongside his partner, Darby Allin.
The match capped off Sting’s career at AEW Revolution on March 3, 2024, from the historic Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina—the same venue where he famously battled Ric Flair at Clash of the Champions I in 1988. In the tornado tag team match, he and Darby Allin defeated The Young Bucks to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championship, allowing Sting to retire undefeated in the company. The finish came when Sting forced Matthew Jackson to submit to the Scorpion Death Lock.
“It was exactly as I envisioned it being,” Sting said of the night. “It was like a dream, a surreal kind of a situation to actually witness it, even though I had pictured it happening exactly the way it did. But an amazing night.” He added, “It’s just going to be etched in my mind forever.” (h/t F4wonline)
While his in-ring career is over, Sting is currently on his “2025 or Never” tour, which he has clarified will be the final events where he appears in his signature full facepaint. “It’s not a goodbye, it’s just no more of this (facepaint),” he explained.
Fans will have several opportunities to see him in the coming weeks. Sting is scheduled for appearances at Horrorhound Weekend in Cincinnati on September 13, Arkansas Comic Con in Little Rock on September 14, and Houston Celebrity Comic Con on September 20.
