The partnership between The Miz and Carmelo Hayes came to a crashing end on the October 3 edition of SmackDown, capped off by a brutal attack from The Miz. The split not only ended their team, “Melo Don’t Miz,” but also cost Hayes a shot at Sami Zayn’s United States Championship later that night. The fallout sets the stage for a new rivalry on the blue brand.
The tension started backstage. The Miz confronted Hayes about their recent loss to The Street Profits in a number one contender’s match. Miz accused Hayes of failing to protect him after he absorbed three finishers. “I took three finishers. Do you know how tag teams work? You’re supposed to be watching my back,” Miz argued.
Hayes fired back, refusing to take the blame. He declared the team finished and called Miz a roadblock to his career. “Yeah, you’re supposed to be watching my back, but you’re always standing in my way. This, this is done,” Hayes said. When Miz questioned him, Hayes doubled down with a warning: “Yeah, and I’m being cool about this whole thing. Because normally, I shoot first. But we good.”
Later in the night, Hayes answered Sami Zayn’s open challenge for the U.S. Title. On his way to the ring, he told the crowd they’d finally see the best version of him without anyone holding him back—a clear nod to splitting from Miz. But his opportunity never came.
Before Hayes could step into the ring, The Miz blindsided him on the entrance ramp with a Skull Crushing Finale. The attack left Hayes unable to compete, and Aleister Black stepped in to claim the open challenge instead.
