Tony Khan Details Reasoning Behind New AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles

AEW is officially expanding its women’s division with the introduction of the Women’s World Tag Team Championship. AEW President Tony Khan confirmed the new titles on the previous Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite, with the inaugural champions set to be crowned in the near future.

In an interview with Forbes, Khan detailed the reasoning behind the move, connecting it directly to the current strength and depth of the women’s roster.

“I’m very excited about the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship coming to AEW this year. Throughout 2025, the women’s division has been delivering more great matches and rivalries than ever before, and so many top stars have continued to emerge. We’ve had amazing signings, like Mercedes Moné, who came in as a free agent and is now the TBS Champion, and if you look back a few years, Toni Storm joined AEW and went on to become one of our greatest champions. Along the way, we’ve added so many talented faces. Kris Statlander, who’s been here from the early years, has become a top star in her own right. More recently, we’ve also seen the rise of some very interesting and very talented women’s tag teams. With the roster at its strongest, the highest quality it’s ever been, I think now is the perfect time to introduce the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships. Women’s wrestling in AEW is the best it’s ever been, and these titles will make it even stronger.”

Khan’s justification for the new championships points to the combination of major free-agent acquisitions, such as current TBS Champion Mercedes Moné, and the growth of established stars like Kris Statlander and former AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm. The emergence of dedicated women’s tag teams was also cited as a key factor in the timing of the announcement.

This decision to add new titles aligns with Khan’s recent public statements regarding AEW’s overall performance and competitive posture. In comments made on September 29, 2025, Khan asserted that viewership for both Dynamite and Collision has increased year-over-year, defying analyst predictions. He framed this growth as a successful response to direct competition from WWE, which has scheduled its own programming, like the Wrestlepalooza PLE, against major AEW shows such as All Out. This confident outlook is shared by others in the company, including former AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm, who recently addressed the competition by stating, “Come on, fight me! Come on!”
