Tony Khan Makes Historic Announcement On AEW Dynamite

AEW President Tony Khan announced on the September 24 edition of Dynamite that the company will introduce the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship. The inaugural champions are scheduled to be crowned “soon” in 2025, though no exact date was given. Khan delivered the news from the production area, expressing pride in the women’s division’s performance throughout the year.

The announcement, first teased at All Out Texas, was followed by Renee Paquette unveiling the new championship belts at ringside to a strong reaction from the live crowd. The design closely mirrors the AEW World Tag Team Championship introduced in 2019.

This becomes the eighth active championship in AEW and the third exclusive to the women’s division, alongside the AEW Women’s World Championship, created for the debut Dynamite in October 2019, and the TBS Championship, introduced in January 2022.

Khan had often discussed the possibility of women’s tag titles during media calls, noting that plans were delayed by injuries within the division. With this announcement, AEW joins other major promotions, including WWE and TNA, in featuring women’s tag team championships.
