Plans for a final match between John Cena and AJ Styles have been canceled, with injuries and other bookings altering the course of Cena's farewell run.

Update On WWE Blocking Major Opponents For John Cena Retirement Tour

WWE has reportedly canceled a planned match between John Cena and AJ Styles that was slated for the 17-time world champion’s ongoing retirement tour. Styles was one of several opponents considered for Cena’s final stretch, but the matchup is no longer in the works.

Other potential opponents have also been taken off the board. Kevin Owens was another name discussed, but he is currently sidelined with an injury. Adam Copeland was also considered before his departure from the company to join AEW.

The decision removes a significant chapter from Cena’s farewell tour. The rivalry between Cena and Styles was a defining feature of the SmackDown brand following the 2016 split, producing a series of acclaimed matches. Their head-to-head record in singles competition remains tied at two wins apiece, with their last one-on-one encounter taking place in 2018.

It appears a potential match against Brock Lesnar at WrestlePalooza on September 20 also influenced the decision to scrap the Styles bout. While the Lesnar match has not been officially announced, it is widely expected to take place.

John Cena’s final match is officially scheduled for the Saturday Night’s Main Event broadcast on December 13, 2025. The farewell tour began after Cena announced his intention to retire at Money in the Bank 2024 and has seen him capture a record-breaking 17th world title from Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.
