WWE brought in Shawn Michaels to oversee the contract signing between Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens for their Royal Rumble match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in San Antonio. Michaels addressed Nick Aldis’ decision to appoint him as moderator after previous attempts failed to maintain order.
After ring introductions and a brief staredown between the competitors, Rhodes signed the contract first. Owens disputed Rhodes’ claims about taking the easy way out, referencing their previous encounter at Bash in Berlin where he strategically targeted Rhodes’ knee.
When I sign this contract, I will shut everyone up who says I am not the true champ and that I am not the rightful holder. I will take everything you have worked for since returning because I deserve it.
Michaels questioned Owens’ apparent jealousy toward Rhodes, prompting Owens to criticize Michaels’ own championship legacy. As Michaels extended his hand for a post-signing handshake, Owens seized the opportunity to attack Rhodes with a cheap shot. When Owens attempted a piledriver on Michaels, Rhodes intervened, leading to Michaels executing Sweet Chin Music on Owens.
