A new championship match is now set for WWE SummerSlam. On the July 19 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, it was announced that the unlikely duo of Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss will challenge Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
The opportunity was created backstage when Flair informed Bliss that she had used her influence with General Manager Adam Pearce to secure the title match. Despite Bliss initially suggesting they part ways after a previous loss, she was pleased with the new development.
“I got us a Tag Team Title Match at SummerSlam,” Flair told Bliss.
Later in the evening, Flair, with Bliss in her corner, faced Raquel Rodriguez in a singles match. An assist from Bliss helped Flair secure the pinfall victory over one-half of the champions, building momentum for their “allies of convenience” team. This comes after their unsuccessful title challenge in a Fatal 4-Way match at the Evolution event on July 13.
The booking represents a shift in direction, as previous reports had suggested a potential singles match between Flair and Bliss at SummerSlam. Instead, they will team up again for a championship opportunity at MetLife Stadium on either August 2 or 3.
