Malakai Black’s tenure in AEW nears its conclusion, with reports indicating his contract expires in early 2025. WWE officials consider him a potential top singles competitor upon his free agency, according to PWTorch.

Black and AEW negotiated terms after he challenged the extension of his contract due to injury time. He last appeared at November’s Full Gear pay-per-view event alongside House of Black members Buddy Matthews, Brody King, and Julia Hart.

Based on current projections, Black could become a free agent between February and March 2025. His initial WWE run ended in 2021 following his release from the company.

WWE Creative Team Already Planning Black’s Return

WWE’s creative department has started developing storylines for Black’s potential arrival. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that while Black’s AEW departure lacks official confirmation, internal sources indicate he won’t return to Tony Khan’s promotion.

Nobody expects him to return to AEW. There have also been comments from WWE that he is expected there once his contract expires. This has been ongoing for some time, but the creative team has recently started discussing him and making plans.

Black maintains an active schedule, with an upcoming match against Orion at Coastal Championship Wrestling in Florida this Saturday.
