WWE Breaks Major Protocol with Ex-Champion’s Non-Renewal

Carlito’s public announcement via social media regarding his departure from WWE has reportedly diverged from the company’s standard procedures for managing talent exits. This perspective was notably discussed by Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez, who highlighted the unusual nature of the announcement, especially considering Carlito’s involvement in an active WWE storyline.

The former WWE superstar informed his audience through social media that his current contract, with two weeks remaining, would not be renewed by the company. He accompanied this news with jests about his recent limited number of appearances before offering a farewell to the WWE fanbase.

During their discussion of Carlito’s announcement, Meltzer and Alvarez emphasized that the method of disclosure did not align with typical WWE practices. They pointed out that Carlito was still part of a developing storyline with Raquel Rodriguez at the time of his social media post.

According to Meltzer and Alvarez, WWE’s usual protocol involves concluding a talent’s on-screen narrative, often by having them “get massacred in some way” to be written off television, before the talent is officially informed about their contract status. They stated, “Usually when we hear about these guys being gone—and they say it—like, put it this way: if you’re gonna be back, I mean the usual protocol, which is why it’s kind of a surprise to me, especially with Carlito, is that if you’re in this situation, they send you out there, you usually get massacred in some way and they blow you off. And then they’ll tell you, ‘Oh, by the way, you’re not being renewed.’”

Consequently, Carlito being aware of his contract’s non-renewal and choosing to announce it publicly himself is viewed as a departure from these established company norms.

This situation arose shortly after R-Truth also announced his WWE contract would not be renewed. These recent non-renewals are reportedly part of roster adjustments overseen by WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, with the decisions attributed to making space for upcoming NXT call-ups.
