WWE Reportedly Made Major Mistake During Key RAW Match

Former WWE head writer Vince Russo criticizes booking patterns on Legion of RAW, stating Otis’ competitive performance against Gunther lost impact due to inconsistent champion presentation.

WWE Reportedly Made Major Mistake During Key RAW Match

Vince Russo has expressed concern over the competitive nature of Gunther’s RAW match against Otis. The former WWE head writer believes this booking approach created issues with the World Heavyweight Champion’s presentation.

Gunther and Otis delivered a surprisingly competitive bout on the latest episode of Monday Night RAW. Many fans noticed the Alpha Academy member managed to execute significant offense against the Ring General.

Russo addressed this booking decision during Sportskeeda Wrestling’s Legion of RAW podcast. He acknowledged that Otis’ physical size made the competitive match logical in isolation.

However, the former creative writer identified a larger pattern affecting the champion’s presentation leading into WrestleMania.

That would be okay because of the size of Otis, but it’s not okay when Gunther goes 50-50 against everybody. That’s the problem! If he is dominating people and all of a sudden he goes 50-50 with Otis, now Otis goes over. But the fact that he goes 50-50 with everybody, Otis doesn’t mean anything.

Russo’s criticism focused on consistency rather than the specific match quality. His comments suggest the competitive bout would have elevated Otis if Gunther had been portrayed as more dominant in previous contests.

Despite the even matchup during the bout, Gunther ultimately secured victory over Otis. The champion followed his win by attacking his opponent after the match concluded.

This post-match assault led to a confrontation with Jey Uso. The WrestleMania challenger came to Otis’ defense, creating tension between the two championship match participants.

Gunther is scheduled to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41. This title defense represents Uso’s first opportunity at singles world championship gold in WWE.
