WWE Set to Feature Major Debut at SummerSlam

The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship will be defended at SummerSlam for the first time, a significant milestone for a title that has navigated a challenging history. The match is set for the historic two-night event on August 2 and 3 at MetLife Stadium, where champions Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez will face the new challenging duo of Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss.

The championship match was officially announced at the beginning of the July 19 episode of SmackDown. The announcement followed backstage segments where Flair informed Bliss that she had secured the title opportunity through discussions with General Manager Adam Pearce. This booking builds on the uneasy alliance between Flair and Bliss, who recently failed to capture the titles in a Fatal 4-Way match at Evolution II on July 13. Citing that neither of them was pinned, Flair leveraged her influence to secure a direct rematch.

On the champions’ side, the team of Rodriguez and Perez is still new. Perez became co-champion after replacing an injured Liv Morgan in July, immediately before their first successful title defense as a unit at Evolution II. Rodriguez, now in her record fifth reign, brings veteran experience, while WWE appears focused on establishing Perez as a prominent new face in the tag team division.

Momentum shifted toward the challengers on the July 18 edition of SmackDown, where Flair defeated Rodriguez in a one-on-one contest. The victory was secured after Bliss interfered at ringside to neutralize Perez, giving the challengers a crucial advantage heading into the premium live event.

Since its inception in 2018, the Women’s Tag Team Championship has faced numerous obstacles, including vacated titles due to talent walkouts and multiple champions suffering injuries. Placing this match on a landmark two-night SummerSlam card, alongside two other women’s championship bouts, signals a renewed commitment from WWE to elevate the prestige of the titles.
