CM Punk has confirmed his World Heavyweight Championship match against Gunther will headline the first night of the historic two-night SummerSlam. The announcement locks in the main event for Saturday, August 2, at MetLife Stadium.
Speaking on the Good Guy/Bad Guy show with Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, Punk explained the significance of the title match closing the show.
“I think it’s important. It’s important for the title. I think it’s important for Gunther. I think the title should, more often than not, always be featured in a main event,” Punk stated. “So, I’m looking forward to not only main eventing SummerSlam but stealing the whole weekend—you know what I mean?”
This championship bout is a critical first title defense for Gunther, who recently regained the gold from Jey Uso after losing it at WrestleMania. For Punk, it represents the culmination of his chase for a world title since his return to WWE in 2023.
The path to this main event was shaped by a high-stakes gauntlet match on WWE RAW, which Punk won to become the number one contender.
