Major independent promotions like GCW and WrestleCon are expressing serious doubts about following WWE to Saudi Arabia for WrestleMania 43, citing cost and cultural clashes.

WWE WrestleMania 43 Announcement Reportedly Causing Major Problems

With WWE set to stage WrestleMania 43 in Riyadh in 2027, the independent wrestling scene faces a difficult decision that blends business, logistics, and core values. Promoters are now weighing whether to follow the industry leader overseas during what is traditionally the most profitable weekend for the indies.

According to Post Wrestling, GameChanger Wrestling (GCW) promoter Brett Lauderdale has already been contacted by two Middle Eastern groups about bringing The Collective to Riyadh. But he acknowledged significant obstacles, including restrictions on female talent. That presents a direct clash with events such as EFFY’s Big Gay Brunch, a fixture of The Collective built around LGBTQ representation in a country where same-sex activity is criminalized.

Finances present another major challenge. Michael Bochicchio, the veteran organizer of WrestleCon, told Post Wrestling it is “highly unlikely” his convention will travel to Saudi Arabia. With costs for staff and international performers deemed prohibitive, Bochicchio said WrestleCon would more likely establish its own anchor event in a U.S. city.

The potential gap in the North American market has already sparked discussion. On the Busted Open Podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray suggested AEW should seize the opening by running its own WrestleMania-style supercard in a central U.S. market like Chicago. He argued AEW could collaborate with independent promotions to offer fans a domestic alternative to Riyadh.

As WWE moves forward with its landmark international show, independent promoters are left to confront the logistical, financial, and ethical realities of participation—decisions that could redefine the shape of wrestling’s biggest weekend.
